GRiZ Launches Fantasy-Themed Video Game to Unlock Unreleased Music

GRiZ is officially back—and he’s inviting fans on a fantasy quest to mark his return. The electronic music star has launched an interactive video game that allows players to unlock exclusive previews from his upcoming mixtape, Sidequest Vol. 1. The project includes 12 unreleased tracks that fans can discover by completing a retro-styled digital adventure.

The game pairs nostalgic, pixelated visuals with a turn-based role-playing format. Players find themselves squaring off against a dragon, where they’re prompted to choose between actions like “fight,” “hide,” or “run.” A digital 20-sided die determines whether the player wins the round—and whether they’re granted access to a new track.

The release marks the final step in a weeks-long breadcrumb trail. It began with a GRiZ-branded newspaper distributed in Chicago and the Bay Area, packed with cryptic puzzles and coded messages. When one of the flyers was folded a certain way, it revealed the word “sidequest”—which, when typed into GRiZ’s website, triggered a mysterious countdown and hints of the video game to come.

Brought to life with the help of designer Tiffany Newman and her team, the game reflects GRiZ’s deep investment in immersive fan experiences. The artist’s vision extended from gameplay to visuals, resulting in a unique blend of digital nostalgia and musical discovery.

Sidequest Vol. 1 follows a string of recent releases from GRiZ, including the GEMiNI EP and his heavy-hitting collaboration “Chaos Theory” with Wooli. It also marks a return to full form following a two-year break from the spotlight. GRiZ’s comeback will continue this fall at Seven Stars, his curated festival in Virginia. He’s also set for two-night headline runs in both San Francisco and Chicago.
