“Win” has a strong theme of empowerment and resilience. How did your personal experiences influence the creation of this song, and how does it reflect your own journey?
I’ve had many dark moments in my life and faced most of them back to back. Heart break, family issues, deception and worst of all, the tragic death of a loved one. I fell into a sort of functioning depression for quite a while as a result. However, no matter how dark things became, my inner voice just wouldn’t allow me to stay stuck in that depressive state. For me, life feels like a game that goes on no matter what and so must we if we want to win.
What’s the most surprising or unconventional source of inspiration you’ve drawn upon for “Win,” and how did it influence the final track?
Great question, I would have to say that a super unconventional source of inspiration for this track was when a reel from Jenifer Lewis’s interview with The Breakfast Club about her experiences with depression came across my IG feed. It happened in total divine timing, as it was I believe the very next day after I had initially imagined the song and it was still in my head. I already knew what I wanted to say at the end, and what the chorus would be, but her words made for the perfect intro! I altered them slightly to make for a smooth transition but they really unexpectedly tied the whole track together in the best way!
She’s awesome!!
Can you walk us through a day in the studio while working on “Win”? What was the atmosphere like, and what were some pivotal moments during its production?
It actually didn’t even take a day. Most all my tracks take about 3 hours tops to make. My producer and I have a wonderful flow every time! I would say one of the pivotal moments was the whispering of “drums”. lol. That was totally his idea and really added an element of character to the track I totally would have missed!
Could you elaborate on the creative process behind the music video and its connection to the song’s message?
I really wanted to capture what depression feels like visually and what continued to come to mind was the shadow men. That’s what it feels like. You are isolating in your room with your phone, not wanting to participate in life in the healthy ways you used to. It’s as if your shadows are holding you hostage in a dark parallel world that you need to be rescued from. So that’s what I brought to life. Kara Major coming to rescue Kara “Minor”, bringing her home to herself through self care and love.
What kind of creative risks did you take with “Win” that you hadn’t tried before, and how did those risks pay off or challenge you?
The dictatorial intro was definitely a creative risk lol giving commands to “get yourself healthy…” ect as song lyrics is I’m sure quite unexpected for the listener. Though that’s another reason it was so perfect. Just as Jenifer’s words struck me that night, I knew they would strike someone somewhere that also needed to hear them, hopefully drawing their attention to the entire concept of the song.
You’ve mentioned the importance of self-love in relation to the song. How do you incorporate this philosophy into your everyday life and career?
Self love is the key to succeeding at anything . From the way we speak to ourselves in our minds, the environments we place ourselves in, the activities we participate in and way we treat our bodies. I’m not perfect of course but I do try to keep a healthy balance of all the above.
Kara, you recently attended Tomorrowland. Can you share what stood out to you about the festival and how the experience influenced your views on live performances and the electronic music scene?
Tomorrowland was an absolute blast! What stood out to me most there was the fact it was a small city of a festival and most of the attendees stayed on the festival grounds in either tiny homes or actual tents! It was like a massive summer camp for adults. Everything was communal from the eating areas to the showers. It added yet another element of unity to what I’ve already always felt was a highly united community. The live performances are always incredible at all of these festivals though I’d have to say the sheer size of this one with its 400k in attendance was another wow factor pointing out just how large the live EDM community has become!
The EDM genre has a vast range of sub-genres and styles. How do you decide which elements to incorporate into your music, and what’s your process for blending them seamlessly?
It’s kind of a flow. I love all types of EDM and am always listening to new music while a part of me is also always simultaneously writing songs in my head. It’s kind of like a game of match. I’ll hear a new genre and then it will just kind of hit me like “oh, that’s the vibe I want for that song I heard the other day in my head but haven’t wrote down yet.” Then I’ll sit in that vibe for a bit and the rest of the song will come to me and just kind of writes itself and fits.
How do you see the evolution of your music over the next five years? What new directions or themes are you excited to explore?
Oh wow, so many. My entire being seeks new information and inspiration constantly so I always have new material in my head and it’s usually something that’s happening right “now”. I expect that will continue to be the case so whatever I feel is the constructive, useful, inspirational or sheer entertaining message of the moment 5 years from now and everything in between, is what ill be cooking in the studio.
