Britney Spears requests accountant replaces father in conservatorship

Britney Spears new attorney, Mathew Rosengart, has announced he is making it his priority to remove the pop star’s father, Jamie Spears, from her controversial conservatorship.

It comes following months of back and forth and just weeks after an explosive firsthand testimony, in which Spears spoke of the ​“embarrassing and humiliating” arrangement that has been in place since 2008.

While previously the conservatorship denied Spears the right to choose her own legal council, Rosengart is the latest in what looks like a positive shift in the #FreeBritney movement, with the next court hearing set for 29^th September at Los Angeles Superior Court.

“Less than two weeks ago, we pledged that after 13 years of the status quo, my firm and I would move aggressively and expeditiously to file a petition to suspect and remove James P. Spears,” Rosengart told Variety outside of the court. ​“It is now a matter of public record, and I announced to Judge Penny this afternoon that we have done so, in less than two weeks. We look forward to litigating the matter in court.”

Rosengart, who has represented Sean Penn, Ben Affleck and Steven Spielberg, filed paperwork to remove Spears’ father and have him replaced with Jason Rubin, president and co-founder of Certified Strategies, Inc. – a company specialising in forensic accounting.

If the court hearing in September is successful, Spears’ father would no longer have control of the singer’s financial decisions, where he currently oversees her reported $60 million (£43m) fortune. Earlier this month, she told a judge in court that she wanted to press charges against Spears for ​“conservatorship abuse”. Spears has since been increasingly vocal on Instagram, posting messages in regards to her conservatorship to her 32m followers.

Following Rosengart’s statement outside the court on Monday, he sent his well wishes to Spears. ​“I once again want to thank Britney Spears for her courage and her fortitude,” he said. ​“I want to thank her fans who have been incredibly supportive of her on social media and otherwise, throughout the country and throughout the world. She deserves it and she appreciates it.”
